Steel Roofing - 9 Reasons Why It's the Best Choice

Years ago, steel roofing was something that was primarily reserved for commercial and industrial buildings. But things have changed! The steel roofing industry has made some major advancements, and, now, you see steel roofs popping up on houses all over the place. Steel is a very popular choice for both new constructions and remodels.

A steel roof is made out of stainless steel – the same material you see in cookware, cutlery, appliances, ship containers, door and window fittings, and plenty of other sturdy things. Regular steel, with a series of protective coatings, is also quite common in the industry.

But why the push for steel roofs? What makes them so great?

1. They are perfect for “going green”

Stainless steel is completely recyclable, so if you ever need to get rid of your roof, you can rest easy knowing that it won’t wind up clogging a landfill. And, a steel roof won’t give off any toxic substances – either through the air, or through the rainwater that washes over it. Plus, having steel roofing can dramatically lower the amount of energy you use. That’s because Steel is strong enough to repel heat in the summer and keep cold air out in the winter – leaving your house at the perfect temperature inside.

2. They are easier to install than other roofs

Installing steel roofing is easy for two reasons. First, because it’s lighter than other roofing materials, it is, thus, easier to carry and get onto the top of your house. Second, since a steel roof can be applied right over your existing roof, you can save valuable time and money by not having to rip off old tiles or shingles. After all, one of the costliest parts of getting a new roof is paying for the “demolition” process – or, the process during which your old roof is scraped off. As an added benefit, because steel is so light, it will not put any extra strain on your structure, like other, heavier types of roofing do.

3. They last longer than other roofs

A steel roof can literally last for decades – without looking like it has been sitting on top of your house for decades. Steel is strong enough to stand up to the elements; rain, sun, and snow won’t damage it or make it fade. Your steel roof will look as good 20 years from now as it does today. And, because it lasts for such a long time, steel roofing typically comes with a lengthy warranty.

4. They are virtually maintenance-free

Unlike tiles that break and need to be repaired – or unlike asphalt shingles that can come loose – steel roofing won’t require any work once it’s installed. The only thing you may ever have to do is hose it off if it gets noticeably dirty. Other than that, you can forget all about it!

5. They are more cost-effective than other roofs

Steel roofing prices are initially higher than asphalt, wood, or tile – meaning that you will pay more for the materials in the beginning. However, when it comes to steel roofing, cost isn’t the only factor. When you consider how long your steel roof will last – coupled with the fact that it requires basically no maintenance – steel can actually cost you less in the end!

6. They are built to be sturdy

Much of the steel roofing you see is actually corrugated steel roofing – which looks similar to corrugated cardboard. These steel roofing sheets are built with ridges and grooves in them. That wavy look gives the steel much more strength than just a flat, smooth panel. With a corrugated metal roof, you will get more strength per square foot than with traditional metal panels.

7. They are fireproof

Sure, you never want to think about a fire tearing through your home. However, you may be able to prevent the worst from happening by installing a steel roof. Steel is naturally fireproof – so it won’t ignite even if it’s subjected to burning embers. Even if the other nearby houses burn to the ground, your house can be spared, thanks to the steel. Because they can keep you safe from a fire, many insurance companies will give you a discount if you have a steel roof.

8. They can be made to look like other types of roofing

Steel roofing shingles are popular with many homeowners because they offer the same look as wood or asphalt shingles – but still give you all of the strength and durability of steel. In fact, if you want something truly elegant, you can get stone-coated steel. Or, you can be totally unique and get a steel roof that is designed to change its appearance as the sunlight changes! If you are worried that installing a steel roof will make your home look too “industrial”, you can simply look for steel with a different finish – which will make your home look more “traditional”, while you reap all of the same benefits.

9. They can fit into any décor

When it comes to steel roofing, the colors are endless. No matter what shade you’re looking for, there is a steel roofing system that can give it to you. Whether you are looking for a roof that’s sparkling silver, jet black, or bright white, you can find it!
